In the upper reaches of the Moscow river, 110 km West of the capital is one of the oldest cities in Moscow region, Mozhaysk, which in 2001 celebrated its 770-year anniversary. For the first time in Russian Chronicles it is mentioned in 1231, although there was, according to archaeological and other sources much earlier. People have long inhabited the area, as evidenced by numerous (more than 80) archaeological monuments: sites, settlements, burial mounds from the Neolithic (5 thousand years BC).
In the XIII century Mozhaysk belonged to the Smolensk Principality, and in 1303 was joined to Moscow, and for many years was an important fortified point on the Western borders of the Muscovite possessions.
